Understanding your transgender and gender expansive loved one starts with separating fact from fiction. Knowledge is a powerful tool but myths and misconceptions about gender identity can create needless fear and uncertainty.

  • Kids are too young to transition.

  • It's non conventional for children to explore gender expression.

  • Social pressure can make kids trans or gender expansive.

  • Puberty blockers cause permanent side effects including infertility.

  • Many people regret transitioning and will detransition.

  • All gender expansive children will grow up to be gay, lesbian, or bisexual.

  • There are unfair advantages to TGEY competing in sports.

  • Being transgender and gender expansive is not a mental illness (Robles et al., 2016).

  • Nonbinary genders have always existed in history and throughout the world (Powers, 2021).

  • Kids know their gender identity as early as age 3 (Fast et al., 2018).

  • Conversion therapy, which claims to make children more confirming, has been widely discredited.  These therapies are ineffective and can be harmful to your loved one (Malory et al., 2019).

  • Anti-trans legislation is primarily based on misinformation and myths (PFLAG, 2023).

  • TGEY can thrive and have fulfilling lives and relationships (DeBower, 2024).

Learning how to turn understanding into meaningful action takes time. Every step of learning and unlearning brings you closer to providing your loved one with the support system they need to thrive.
